Enabling Dept to maintain rapid buy-and-build growth
Dept is an international digital agency with more than 1,200 experienced thinkers and makers assisting an ever increasing number of large corporates, often multinationals. This growth is backed by the agency’s main shareholder, Waterland. Dept brings people and businesses together in an innovative way. The agency does this by offering experiences that people want and that organisations need.
Dept’s success stems from a combination of creativity, technology and data. Fuelled by an active buy-and-build strategy, the agency is creating a growing international presence. Dept is now active in the Netherlands, Germany, the UK, Ireland, Switzerland, Denmark, Spain, Macedonia and most recently in the USA.
Examples of Dept’s creations include developing and creating ABN AMRO’s SME financing platform New10, award-winning app Unravel Van Gogh, a new Transavia brand identity, strengthening the visual brand identity of Chocomel, and social media campaigns for both JBL and Samsung.
NIBC’s assignment was to enable Dept to continue the acquisitive growth path it has pursued since it was bought by Waterland in 2015. This way, Dept can keep rolling out its international buy-and-build strategy, becoming a leading global provider of digital services.
We joined the existing club deal, providing valuable liquidity for Dept to grow. The sector expertise within the team allowed us to assess and analyse the opportunity, the market and the value of the proposition swiftly, successfully and efficiently. In addition, our strategic partnership with an institutional client enabled us to increase our impact and support Dept with acquisition facilities in two financing rounds.
Backed by core sponsor Waterland, Dept is growing rapidly through buy-and-build. It acquired five agencies in 2018 alone, as well as two in the early months of 2019. Dept plans to continue this strategy in the future.
"NIBC was able to make a difference with its extensive knowledge of the market and was a reliable partner in quickly delivering and contributing to the financing. This financing enables us to pursue our growth strategy." - Frank Schmid, COO at Dept.
